There were plenty of good waves, good rides and good times to be shared by surfers visiting the Wedge in Newport Beach on Friday morning, Sept. 2, 2011.
All wave rides begin and end in water, but sometimes there's an element that comes between those two. Here are some good rides, wipe outs and wave exits from my filming at The Wedge in Newport Beach.
It wasn't clean, or super-duper big, but there were plenty of waves to go around at The Wedge in Newport Beach on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011. Surfers, body surfers and body boarders came out to get wet on the last day of the big SSW swell hitting the coast. The Wedge was providing lots of action as the sidewave and the Cylinders break were all hitting.
I went down to Newport today after the blackball was lifted and shot basically until sunset. Here are the best rides I managed to get. If you're one of the brave ones in the water, hit me up and I'll see about tagging you in the videos and adding you to the keywords.
Enjoy!

Even though the waves at the The Wedge in Newport Beach weren't really pumping, every now and then a set would roll in that made people on the beach take notice. The following is 2 minutes from one set of waves that rolled in Thursday that proved, even on an off-day, The Wedge is no joke.
The Wedge was pumping at times, like this nice set, but I'm going back this afternoon when it's supposed to be bigger. Sorry about the audio, I had a little problem with my mic.
Ten-time world champ Kelly Slater adds another notch to his belt, taking home $100,000 and a piece of the old Huntington Beach Pier as he cruises through the finals. Australia's Yadin Nicol had surfed brilliantly during the Open but failed to catch any significant waves when it mattered and fell to Slater handily, 16.27 to 2.57.
